Jasper Smalfelt

Client Services Coordinator

What is your role at FairField Mediation Center, and what inspired you to join this team?

I am the Client Services Coordinator here at the FairField Center. I first worked with the center as an unpaid intern from May 2023-December 2023. I worked full-time over the summer and part-time over the fall. While interning, I got to see firsthand how much of a difference FFC makes in our local Harrisonburg community. Assisting members of our community in generating their own solutions to the life challenges they were navigating was incredibly rewarding. When I graduated from JMU in fall 2024, I wanted to continue where I left off and reached out to the FFC about a full-time position which I am grateful to have gotten.

What’s one project or achievement at the Center that you’re particularly proud of?

In an effort to increase workplace efficiency and grant more agency to our mediators, I created a new calendar system for the center. This calendar is a spreadsheet which enables mediators to see our caseload and sign-up to mediate the cases for which they are interested and available. This improves efficiency and agency by removing center staff as middlemen and allowing mediators to sign-up for cases directly.

What’s something people might not know about you (e.g., hidden talent, favorite hobby)?

I am a musician, specifically a singer, and have been singing for 12 years since the 6th grade. While in high school, I attended the Virginia Governor’s School for visual and performing arts as a vocalist. While I have not been a part of any organized musical  groups in college, I still sing frequently as a hobby.

How does your work contribute to the mission of fostering a collaborative community?

As an employee of the FFC, I get to help serve members of our community by providing access to dispute resolution services. The FFC helps give self-determination to clients by allowing them to settle their disputes themselves outside of the court system. This is beneficial because individuals have the most intimate and detailed knowledge of their own lives and the challenges they have to overcome. This uniquely situates them to come up with more nuanced and well-tailored solutions to their issues than the court may be able to since the courts are not privy to all aspects of individual’s lives. This is especially true for underprivileged members of our community who may have hectic schedules (i.e. working multiple jobs or having to work and provide childcare without assistance) and may not have the resources to hire help in navigating the legal system. Lastly, the FFC focuses on dispute resolution services which are collaborative in nature compared to the court system which is typically adversarial. I feel that a collaborative process often leads to better solutions and thus better outcomes than adversarial ones.

How has working here shaped your perspective on conflict and community engagement?

Working at the FFC has given me a much greater appreciation for the benefit that alternative dispute resolution services provide for individuals and the community. As a FFC employee I have witnessed the need and demand for conflict resolution within the community. I have seen many cases where people’s lives are in disarray because they are unable to work through their interpersonal conflicts. These interpersonal conflicts prevent them from being able to work together to find solutions to life’s challenges. I have also seen how mediation has helped these same individuals move past their interpersonal conflicts to focus their time and energy on the issues in their lives which are most pressing. Without the opportunity to attend court-referred and subsidized mediation, many of these people may not have had the bandwidth to navigate the challenges of everyday life while simultaneously take a step back to resolve more long-term issues they face.
