Mediators, drawn from various professions like lawyers, human resource managers, teachers, and more, undergo mediation training. This training emphasizes crucial interpersonal skills such as active listening, negotiation, paraphrasing, and conflict resolution, applicable in mediating conflicts, facilitating meetings, or family conversations.

Our Training Services
Mediator Training
We offer all courses needed to complete the mediator certification requirements governed by the Supreme Court of Virginia at the GDC, JDR, Circuit Family, and Circuit Civil levels. In addition, Fairfield's trainers regularly offer workshops and courses approved for continuing mediator education credits (CMEs).
Get Certified Today!
FairField Center offers training for Virginia Supreme Court certification in mediating court cases. Trainees, with a bachelor's degree or relevant work experience, participate in short courses (4-20 hours each), observations, and co-mediations to apply for Virginia Mediation Certification. Approved by the Office of the Executive Secretary of the Supreme Court of Virginia, FairField Center ensures both trainers and training classes meet certification standards. However, successful completion is determined solely by the Office of the Executive Secretary, emphasizing the importance of meeting their criteria for mediator certification.
While all FairField's courses are certified, it's important to note that attendance and participation in mentorship do not guarantee successful completion for mediation certification. Decisions regarding mediator certification are exclusively made by the Office of the Executive Secretary at the Supreme Court of Virginia.
For further details on the mediation certification process, please reach out to Shannon Sneary Alabanza, FairField’s Director of Training, at +1 (540) 434-0059 ext. 2 or trainingsupport@fairfieldcenter.org. You can also visit the Virginia Judicial System website for VA Mediation Certification Requirements.
Continuing Mediator Education (CME)
Virginia Mediators must be recertified every two years. The deadline is always October 31st. In order to be recertified, mediators must complete 10 CME credit hours. These credits can be earned by taking Fairfield Center’s various CME workshops.
All CME credits are labeled “ethics” or “non-ethics” and mediators must complete at least 2 ethics credits for their recertification. As with Fairfield Center’s Mediator Trainings, all CMEs are online and synchronous, so clear your calendar, and be prepared to participate actively.
